The Croaking
This is my favorite comic! It revolves around a society of bird-people (my words) distinguished by species.
Here we have Ky Cedoc (left), an Osprey; Ree Vermilioss (middle), a Nankeen Kestrel; and Scra (right), a Carrion Crow.
Although the story mainly revolves around the discovery of the mysterious nature of "The Croaking", this story is one that also includes themes of mystery, elitism, prejudice, gang violence, self-determination, friendship, and, yes, even romance. It seems clear that certain species are simply better suited for certain roles in their society, but this story also confronts transgressing the boundaries of societal norms in the pursuit of a role others might disapprove of. The artwork is one of my favorite aspects of the comic, but the writing keeps me waiting for that notification bell to ring every Saturday.
Castle Swimmer
This comic follows Kappa (right), a special individual who serves as a "beacon" for the sea. He's constantly sought after to fulfill his role for those who need him.
Siren (left) is the prince of a shark kingdom and has never left the castle walls.
Siren is meant to fulfill the prophecy of his people as the only means to save them from a terrible curse which causes accidents and to happen across the kingdom, giving everyone scars - except for him. But when he meets Kappa, can he bring himself to do it? I personally love how this story unfolds, knowing themes of friendship, self-determination vs. collectivism, duty to one's people, forgiveness, and even romance.
The Doctors are Out
This comic follows Dr. Matias Guevara (on the right), a doctor who owns a health clinic in his neighborhood. Much to his dismay, a Dr. Fernando Guevera (on the left) opens his veterinary practice right next door!
Imagine having your patients find themselves at the veterinarian's instead (or vice versa). The last name thing. Yikes.
This is a fairly new comic, and the storytelling style is less intense and more casual, following snippets of everyday life for these two. The art is A+ and I wished the artist would draw more content of them for readers to fawn over...erm, I mean, appreciate, on the Internet. This comic is nice if you're ready to see how this feud unfolds in real-time.
My Weird Roommate
"He is a punk, and he is a nerd, can I make it any more obvious?"
Between someone who spends most of his time strumming his guitar and working out and another who spends all day watching anime and writing BL fiction (I'll also let you do your own research), read more to find out who these two navigate their living situation.
Novae
This is one of the first comics I ever read and instantly fell in love with. It chronicles, in the words of the artists, the adventures of a sweet tempered necromancer named Sulvain (right) and a passionate 17th century astronomer named Raziol (left).
This comic is on WebToon Canvas, which allows artists to post on WebToon for free consumption. However, in general, WebToon Originals are exclusively on that platform, are not published anywhere else, and are usually extremely high quality artwork. I think the creators originally publish on a different website of their own, which could explain why they are on Canvas instead of being an Original as they highly deserve. That said, this is most definitely one of the highest quality comics I have ever come across and recommend highly.
R.U. Screwed
Last but not least, this comic navigates the lives of two students and floormates at Raisley University, Howie (right) and Sooch (left).
There's themes of friendship, identity, and acceptance. Awesome if you want a nice romance story that keeps you on the edge of your seat (especially with the endless cliffhangers).
